Genre #1: Skwee

Welcome to Genre Safari’s first-ever newsletter edition!

Sorry for the wait, I let this project build steam before getting the ball rolling on content.

Hope you enjoy the Safari 🌴 đźŽ§ď¸Ź

Inception: Circa 2009

Origin: Finland/Sweden

Skweee is a music genre that started in Scandinavia, where producers use analogue synths to create stripped-back, funky, and experimental tracks. It’s raw, catchy, and a bit unexpected, mixing retro video game sounds with basslines that really grab you. With labels like Sweden’s Flogsta Danshall and Finland’s Harmönia leading the charge, Skweee has cemented its place in the underground music scene.

It’s a brilliant example of how you don’t need a massive setup to create music that’s fresh and packed with character. Talking of character, I’ve never seen such an incredible set of tracklist names.

Ok, well, there’s a whole lot going on while, at the same time, there isn’t. That probably doesn’t make sense but perhaps will do after listening to one or two of these tracks.

Sidenote: I’m not sure if it’s the same for the entire back catalogue, but the tracks I listened to took about 2 minutes to start showing their personalities. Give it a chance.
